the take
The very first thing I thought when listening to the whole album was: damn he misses his ex… I wouldn’t say this is his strongest album but he had a few standouts. My faves were Malcom in the Middle, Difficult Love, Breathe, I Saw Your Face, Gun to my Head. I also agree with some people’s comments about the levels of freaky on this album. It feels the amount of times he talked about sex or intimacy crossed over the line where I’m like ok bro that’s a little much now. I also noted that the way he talks about his past relationship with the girl in the songs/his ex: “he really liked sex and intimacy with this person which to an extent only feels like liking someone for surface level stuff” (from my notes app) in the sense that he cared more about how their bodies felt connected vs how the actual relationship grew to be. Nothing wrong with mourning the loss of a relationship in a song/album, but it felt like it bled too deeply into the music and muddled with Malcom’s typical artistry. Sorry that this relationship broke up, Malcom 😅
