Fountain Baby
“As someone who was completely indifferent about the popular Afrobeats sound just a couple years ago, I've been giving the genre a chance a lot more as of late. Then something about "Angels in Tibet" just took over me, whether it's either due to the production or Amaraae's vocal ranges she displays on here. In all actuality, I enjoyed "Fountain Baby" a lot more than I thought I would, as this was just a completely fun record from top to bottom. The production on here is more bouncy and "in your face" than I'm normally used to, but still couldn't help but get my basic two-step dance moves in from time to time. I guess the fact that the beats sound the same could come off as something that hurts this record a bit, but I still enjoyed what I heard sonically on here. Plus, with Amaraae's vocal range showing off her versatility, this record really shows how gifted she is. A bit simplistic and repetitious on the songwriting side of things, but it doesn't affect my opinion of the album all too much. "Angels in Tibet" is the obvious favorite on here, but there's something about "Water from Wine" and "Disguise" that also kept me coming back for more. The whole album is beautiful, but those three songs stuck out to me both first and the most. Apparently, this was one of the best albums of 2023 and I somehow missed it until just recently. Shout out to my crush for lowkey putting me on to greatness because "Fountain Baby" is just so amazing.”

roses are red, tears are blue — A Fountain Baby Extended Play
“Pretty much everything I've said in my review of the standard edition of Amaarae's "Fountain Baby" can/does apply to "roses are red, tears are blue". That's definitely not a bad thing, though. While these extras still follow the "Fountain Baby" blueprint to a T, the material on here is also as infectious and addictive. If anything, this EP sounds a bit more moody and experimental than I expected it to be, but it's still a vibe. It's kind of like this is a darker POV of "Fountain Baby", and Amaarae's vocals and emotion perfectly envision the musical environment she envisioned. "jehovah witness" and the remix to "Disguise" are my top two favorites, but this entire collection of songs are so amazing to me where I'm surprised she didn't include at least half of these on the standard edition. Easily a worthwhile addition.”

THE ANGEL YOU DON'T KNOW
“After being recommended by my friend to check out Amaarae's "Fountain Baby" album, I've been kind of all over the place in her discography. I listened to her "BLACK STAR" album before "THE ANGEL YOU DON'T KNOW", but reviewed this one first. I actually enjoyed "THE ANGEL YOU DON'T KNOW", which is kind of surprising because I didn't think it'd leave a strong enough impression on me. Amaarae was still trying to find her unique sound at this time, and the material on here directly represent as such. Still, she succeeds in creating great tracks that are still good during that spot in her career, while experimenting and seeing early signs of her career development musically. There isn't much of the Alté/Afrobeats sound on here in comparison to later work, but there still are noticeable traces of it, such as "FEEL A WAY" and "SAD, U BROKE MY HEART". The thing is, though, the album ends up sounding a bit predictable after listening for a while, which made me kind of lose slight interest at certain points throughout, but nothing too crazy to make me just outright turn it off. That still makes for a great project, one that's at the least consistent if nothing else. As an official debut album, this is solid. P.S. "HELLZ ANGEL" might be the best song in Amaarae's discography (so far).”
