SEPT 5TH
“While crafting my R&B history lesson playlist for a friend of mine, I added dvsn's "If I Get Caught" to said playlist. Running it back a bit and realizing how much I used to have the song on repeat (during my toxic era, nonetheless), I decided to peek through their Spotify page and just realized I had an album saved by them YEARS AGO, like since 2018-ish, probably: "SEPT 5TH". I told myself that I was gonna check this album out, but here we are, seven years later. I will admit that a part of me was expecting more of that toxic music that was present on dvsn's "Working on My Karma". The opposite is present here, actually. Through ten tracks, Daniel Daley teeters from being physically attractive to someone to regretting their mistakes to being cold and distant to being infatuated with their lover. Put those range of topics over Nineteen85's production, which sounds so moody and sensual pretty much the entire time, and you'd have a consistent body of work. While I might point out that there really isn't too groundbreaking here in terms of the sound the duo was going for, this is one of those albums that's made for the background, no shade. Like, it's one of those ones that puts you in a trance and helps you relax. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of tracks on here on while enjoying one-on-one time with your guest. In short, an amazing project. "With Me" and "The Line" are two of my main favorites, especially the latter. Still mad at myself for getting around to this seven years later after saving it to my library.”
