Sweetback

β€œSweetback’s self-titled album was such an exciting discovery as a fan and admirer of Sade!! Sweetback is a project created by Sade’s band members, Stuart Matthewman, Paul Denman, and Andrew Hale, who recorded the album after Sade’s Love Deluxe World Tour. The album features a variety of guest vocalists who bring to the album their distinctive interpretations of trip-hop, r&b, soul, and melodic undulating performances. Of the many descriptors I could use to explain why I loved this album, I would choose to highlight its completeness. Some songs shift subtly from one another, others venture more noticeably, and the album’s gravitational core remains clear and natural throughout. I revere Portishead, Massive Attack, and Thievery Corporations as exemplars of happy marriages between rhythm, melody, and soul. Sweetback is a huge part of that conversation. My only wish was that I had discovered it sooner.”

Jeremiah Chiu

β€œI’ve been looking for a record that comes even a little bit close to the beauty of Ichiko Aioba’s β€œWindswept Adan” for a long time now. I finally found it in this album!!! I love how it’s difficult to distinguish the field recording elements from studio recording elements. The sounds of outside, from wind chimes to birds and gentle waves, play beautifully with soft synths and strings. The ambient tracks have so much depth to them. It sounds like having a dream in the afternoon sun on a quiet beach. Very happy to have found another perfect album!!! :)”

Mother Earth's Plantasia

Mort Garson

β€œThis album made me smile!!! It was composed in 1976 by Mort Garson in collaboration with Lynn and Joel Rapp, β€œfern correspondents” (love), to help plants grow. The vinyl was included with a houseplant purchase from Mother Earth, formerly on Melrose Ave. in LA. Someone posted a recording of the vinyl in the 2010s, and archivists found the original record and Sacred Bones Records reissued it in 2019. The album is wonderfully whimsical and playful. It feels like a breath of fresh air. The synths are nostalgic reminders of my outdoor adventures when I was little. My dog and my cat fell asleep in their sunny spots while I listened. And our houseplants seemed to perk up ever so slightly, too :)”
