the take
The last time I listened to a new Megan Moroney album, it's safe to say that while I thought "Am I Okay?" was decent enough, it's no "Lucky". (I've since relistened to "Am I Okay?" via its deluxe and the album grew on me.) That said, while I enjoyed "Wish I Didn't" before Megan's latest release "Cloud 9", I didn't exactly have too high of expectations for it. But believe it or not, this is actually great. Like, "borderline-amazing" great. Megan Moroney's vulnerability has always been on display throughout her music, but she sounds more emotional here thanks to the complimenting country pop production that's a bit more refined on here. It helps get Megan's thoughts out to the world while not trying to overpower her voice. "Wedding Dress", the aforementioned "Wish I Didn't", and "Beautiful Things" are among a few tracks show that even with her voice that's both calm yet direct, her singing about dealing with the pros and cons of relationships is like she's speaking directly to the listener. And while there are many good songs on here (sorry "I Only Miss You"), a part of me feels like Megan Moroney played it a bit safe overall. As of now, I have "Cloud 9" below Megan Moroney's "Lucky" and "Am I Okay?", but this is still a good project that somehow surprised me. I truly hope this grows on me in the months to come.
