the take
Thematically this is a very coherent album (if we are going by the title as the theme). I do not believe this is Rodrigo’s best album, however. Part of me wishes she sat on this a little longer, with some of the songs not as great lyrically. “What’s wrong with me” captures the idea of the album the best, what I would dub the thesis track . Being completely and utterly lovesick, ill from romance, leading even one to “drop dead.” But, being sick can be frustrating and tiring. She explores this dual edged sword of love cautiously. Some thoughts on individuals tracks: - “Maggots for brain” I like musically, but would fair better as a ballad lyrically -“U+me= <3” is a bop but it’s giving “2+2=5” lyric that it’s an uncomfortable listen - “My way” is an angry electric bop and a better than revenge type track. - “Begged” is a top 3 on her discography - “What’s wrong with me” is fire and standout track. The only thing is Robert smith sounds a bit awk. - Wowwww “less” is beautiful and the vibe I thought “maggots for brains”would be musically. The piano is ENOUGH by itself. -“Expectations” is everything a disappointed and high achieving 20-something needs to listen to Rankings on first listen: Begged What’s wrong with me Less Expectations Cigarette smoke Purple Drop dead Honeybee My way Stupid song The cure Maggots for brains U+me= <3
dissociative
would listen again
